Barvas and Brue Community Centre: The next committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th November at 8.00 pm at the Centre. The Post of Company Secretary to the Community Centre has been filled by Suzi Morrison. Most of the committee members work full time and because of the limited time on our hands, we are in desperate need for some help. We all give our time freely but we need more members to help with fund raising in order to keep the centre open and running successfully. Suzi also desperately needs some clerical help. The more people on the committee – the less time we need to give.  Surely there is someone in the large area of Barvas and Brue who can spare a couple of hours?

Community Council: The next meeting of the Community Council will be held on Monday 30th November at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Donna MacLean, Brue has recently joined the committee, however one vacancy still remains. This is an opportunity to meet your councillors, learn about what really matters in the community and even make a difference now and again. Contact Martin Scott on 840470 or Suzi Morrison 840406 if interested in joining.

New West Side Primary School:  Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Western Isles School Project are holding an exhibition of the new West Side Primary School at the Centre on 28th October. Members of the management and design teams will be in attendance to explain the proposals and answer any questions. A full description of the proposal will be on view. This is open to all and will be open between 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m.

Jacky Scott, Brue   is running the New York  Marathon on 1st November for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.  Anyone wishing to sponsor her can do so by filling in a sponsor form at Welcome Inn Filling Station or by phoning Jacky  on 840 470.

We have all seen a very dedicated Jacky running through Barvas and Brue and across the moor. Jacky - we wish you every success in this prestigious event, our good wishes and support go with you.

To book a function at the Centre please contact Suzi on 840406 or Peggy on 840400.

Traditional Music Session will be held on Saturday 7th October at 8.00pm.  Bring along your musical instrument and join in, - or just come and enjoy the music.

Spinning Class: All welcome to come along to a spinning class on Saturday 7th November at the Activity Room in the Centre from 2.30 to 4.30. Informal session on learning the traditional art of spinning (and a cup of tea too!)

Prize Bingo Night:  will be held in the Community Centre on Friday 30th October at 8.00 p.m.  Please come along – even if you have never played bingo before, our M.C. and bingo caller Tom MacIver, will give step by step instructions.  It promises to be a fun evening with numerous great prizes donated by various organisations.  All funds raised will go to help fund Barvas and Brue Senior Citizens outings.

Lower Barvas Common Grazings: Shareholders meeting to be held in the Barvas Tigh Ceilidh at 7.30 p.m. on Friday 23rd October. If you have any items for the agenda please contact the Grazings Clerk on 840450 or e-mail johnnmacleod@google.com. All shareholders welcome.

Barvas & Brue Youth Club meet every Wednesday (term time only) in the Barvas & Brue Community Centre from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm.  The Club is open to P4 – P7 pupils and costs £1 per session.  Tuck shop available.

Community Bonfire:  Following a thorough investigation by the Community Council, it appears that it will not be feasible to hold a Community Bonfire due to various insurance and health and safety issues and  unfortunately this will not now go ahead.

First Responders: Following the success of the First Responders Scheme in other areas, there is now one being set up to cover the area between Barvas and Shawbost.  This is entirely manned by volunteers and to get the scheme off the ground  fundraising is necessary. The first event will be a children’s Halloween Party on Saturday 31st October at Shawbost School at 2.00 p.m. Admission is £5.00 with face painting, games, music, food and plenty fun.  First Responders is a very valuable scheme in any community and its success has already been proved in other areas on the island. Please also look out for posters, etc for future fundraising events.

The Barvas and Brue website is still very much a young project and we would greatly appreciate your help in developing it.  If you have something you wish to see on it, whether it be an article or a photo of an event you once had at the centre, please send it in by using this form.
