Western Isles Army Cadet Force Comes To Barvas
The Army Cadet Force in the Western Isles is opening in Barvas Hall starting on 12 January at 7.30 p.m. Aimed at children in secondary education from 12 to 18, girls and boys are equally welcome to attend. Part of the national Army Cadet Force movement with about 40,000 cadets, Western Isle ACF has a strength of 54 cadets and is looking to expand. Training subjects include map reading, first aid, fieldcraft, skill at arms & shooting, (Small and full-bore.) military knowledge and drill. Cadets must take part in community events and are encouraged to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Cadets can take part in activities at local, regional and National levels, including pipes & drums training, shooting, swimming, cross-country and athletics and tug of war competitions. Older cadets benefit from a wide range of leadership and instruction skills training events
The Army Cadet Force requires adults in order to run ACF detachments. Anyone over 18 and interested in becoming involved in the Army Cadet Force is welcome to attend and get a feel for the organisation. No military experience is required and full training is given.
Talk & Slide Show: There will be a talk and slide show on that famous creature the guga, given by Dods MacFarlane on Friday 30th January at 7.30 p.m. This is for the Senior Citizens Group and will be held in the Activity Room at the Community Centre, admission is only £3.00 with tea or coffee and biscuits.

Web Design (continuation) From Tuesday 27th January. 7.00 – 9.00, 10 week duration, Barvas Community Centre

Westside Workshops:
It is also planned to run the following workshops: Traditional Music Sessions, Cake Decorating, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, Genealogy, Photography & Digital Cameras, Food Hygiene and Spinning. A Table Top Sale with a soup and sandwich lunch will be held in the Centre at 12 noon on Saturday 7th February. To book a stall, please phone Suzi (840 406) or Peggy (840 400). The Centre committee are holding this event to help raise funds for on-going works at the hall, and the local phone book will also be for sale then.
The West Side Agricultural Society will hold their annual Dinner Dance on Friday 20th February.
