Traditional Music Session will be held on Saturday 5th September at 8.00pm. Bring along your musical instrument and join in or just come and enjoy the music!
Community Centre Website: The website is up and running. Visit www.barvasbruecentre.com and do let us have your comments.
Community Council: The next meeting of the Community Council will be held on Monday 31st August at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. All welcome. There is a vacancy for a new member to join the Council. This is an opportunity to meet your councillors, learn about what really matters in the community and even make a difference now and again. Contact Martin Scott on 840470.
Barvas and Brue Community Centre: The next committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 2nd September at 8.00 pm at the Centre.
The Post of Company Secretary to the Community Centre will become vacant in September. This important position would be ideal for a volunteer with some experience of running a business, and basic knowledge of company law. Contact Calum MacKay on 840 302 or Peggy Macleod on 840400
Tea Towels: Do you have any tea towels belonging to the Centre lurking in your cupboards? We know that when tea towels get used they get taken home to be washed; unfortunately the return journey to the Centre doesn’t seem to happen. A large boxful of towels has dwindled to three or four so, if there are any in your cupboards, or even if you have any you wish to donate, please take them down or hand to any committee member. There are also a number of jackets, scarves, etc left at the Centre - if any belong to you please get in touch with a committee member.
To book a function at the Centre please contact Suzi on 840406 or Peggy on 840400.
The West Side Agricultural Society would like to thank most sincerely all those volunteers, sponsors, supporters and competitors, too many to thank individually, who helped to make the Annual Show such a success this year. “Mòran taing dhuibh uile.”
Lindsay Weir - A great opportunity to listen to a mainland band play live in the Barvas Centre on Friday 21st August. Doors open at 8.30 p.m. and entrance is £5.00.
Fios a’ Bhaile Issue 32 is now for sale from the usual outlets or from KJ MacDougall, Comann Eachraidh Secretary.
Community Bonfire: At the last meeting of the Community Council, it was suggested and agreed to hold a Community Bonfire and Fireworks display. The date for this was set for the Friday 6th November.
Barvas & Brue Youth Club AGM will be held on Tuesday 1st September at 7.30 pm in the Barvas & Brue Community Centre. The Youth Club are always looking for more helpers and if you are interested in getting involved with the Youth Club please come along to this meeting. If there are no helpers – there is no Youth Club.
Medicinal Plants on Lewis On Tuesday 1st September Natasha Lloyd is giving a short informal talk on Medicinal Plants of Lewis at the Centre to which all are welcome. Come and learn a few snippets of information about the subject and Natasha will be delighted to learn about traditional uses for local plants. Do you have any memories of plants being used medicinally in the past? Can you assist in logging this information so that future generations have access to this knowledge? Please feel free to come along at 7.30 and have a chat, a cup of tea - and a biscuit or two. Natasha Lloyd is a 3rd Year Bsc Herbal Medicine Student with the University of East London. This is partly for her dissertation on the Medicinal Plants of Lewis, and if you are unable to make the talk, feel free to contact her on 07775 727217.

The Barvas and Brue website is still very much a young project and we would greatly appreciate your help in developing it. If you have something you wish to see on it, whether it be an article or a photo of an event you once had at the centre, please send it in by using this form.
